17-4PH is stocked by Intoco in condition A / Con.A / Cond.A / solution annealed and H1150 + 1150 precipitation double aged age hardened, bright machined quality bar. The double aged H1150 + 1150 is hardened in accordance with NACE MR-0175 or ASTM A564 condition H1150D, this is twice aged for 4 hours @ 620 degrees centigrade / 620°C (or 1150 degrees F / 1150°F). H1150D is the more common standard of supply. H1150M (which is age hardened 2 hrs @ 760 degrees C + 4 hours @ 620°C) gives better impact properties with slightly less strength (yield strength 115 KSI compared to 125 ksi). The second aging on H1150+1150 is used to bring down the hardness values. It was found that resistance to sulfid stress-cracking is given at a maximum hardness of 33 HRC. Technically there are two processes taking place at aging: copper precipitation and formation of reversion martensite. After the first aging, the microstructure is made of hardened martensite with a depleted Cu (copper) content, reversion austenite and some amount of ferrite and primary, i.e. original retained austenite. During the second aging, hardening will not resume, but additional reversion austenite can form, thus increasing toughness.

The 17-4 PH / 1.4542 grade of stainless (Acier, inoxydable, Rostfreier, Stahl, Acciaio, Inossidabile, Aco, Inoxidável, Acero, Inox, Inoxidables, Rostfrei, Roestvrij) combines high strength, hardness (upto 300 degrees C) and corrosion resistance. The mechanical properties can be optimized with heat treatment. 17/4 PH should not be used at temperatures above 300 degrees C / 572 degs. F, or at very low temperatures. It has adequate resistance to atmospheric corrosion, or in diluted acids or salts where it's corrosion resistance is equal to stainless grade 304 or 430 in most media, including some industries in chemical, petroleum, paper, dairy and food processing. Alloy 17-4PH / 1.4542 withstands corrosive attacks better than any of the standard hardenable stainless steels.

17-4PH / 17/4PH / Euronorm 1.4542 / 1.4548 / Type AISI Type 630 ASTM A693 grade 630 / AMS 5604B / AFNOR Z6CNU17-04 / Din EN X5CrNiCuNb16.4 / JIS SUS630 stainless steel can also be manufactured to aircraft standard AMS 5643 / 5622 (MSRR 6601) vacuum arc remelt (VAR) which gives the grade good transverse properties as well as being corrosion resistant and having medium to high strengths in the appropriate aged condition. Mechanical properties are defined by the appropriate temperature for the relevant H condition (h900 / h1000 / h1025 / h1050 / h1100 / h1150 / h1150+1150 / h1150M - Hxxx condition = aged at xxx degrees F). The 17-4PH / 17/4PH / Euronorm 1.4542 / 1.4548 / Type AISI Type 630 ASTM A693 grade 630 / AMS 5604B / AFNOR Z6CNU17-04 / Din EN X5CrNiCuNb16.4 / JIS SUS630 stainless steel material is NACE MR0175 approved.
